Make An Impact

As the oldest boarding school in the United States, West Nottingham Academy has a tradition of philanthropy that spans nearly three centuries. Since the school’s founding in 1744, thousands of alumni, parents, and friends have made it a priority to support the school’s mission.

Gifts of any size are deeply appreciated and have a significant impact on the school community. Please accept our thanks, in advance, for considering a gift to West Nottingham Academy. For questions regarding giving to West Nottingham Academy, please contact the Advancement Office by emailing advancement@wna.org.

Unrestricted gifts allow West Nottingham the greatest flexibility in meeting operational needs tied to strategic initiatives, as well as unanticipated needs that emerge during the academic year. While leadership gifts to the Nottingham Fund comprise an important part of operational support, the collective impact of donors, at all levels, creates a positive financial impact on the school beyond that of any single donor.

The Nottingham Fund, our annual fund, allows you to make an immediate and direct impact on each student and faculty member, as well as to the quality and range of school programming. Among other things, donations to the Nottingham Fund support:

  • Innovative and challenging academic, athletic, and art programs
  • Recruitment of talented faculty
  • Support for student scholarships for families with demonstrated need
  • Small class sizes and individual attention to students
  • Educational technology
  • Maintenance of a first-class facility
  • Financial relief during the COVID-19 pandemic

Ways to Give

We value every gift we receive, regardless of size or the method of donation. West Nottingham Academy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.

IRA Charitable Rollover and Qualified Charitable Distributions

If you are a U.S. taxpayer and at least 70 1/2 years of age, you may make gifts to West Nottingham Academy from your IRA without having to count those funds as part of your adjusted gross income. Consequently, you do not have to pay taxes on the gifted amount.

Distributions, which count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD), must be made directly from the IRA trustee to WNA, and the individual maximum is $100,000 per calendar year. This is a great reason to consider using your IRA (instead of cash) to make a charitable gift.

For more information about this opportunity, contact Lauren Grow at lgrow@wna.org.

Brokers and IRA administrators don’t always include donors’ names on stock transfers and IRA distribution checks, so if you’re planning to make a gift to West Nottingham Academy using an IRA or stocks, please let us know so that we can identify and recognize your gift promptly. And, please let us know if you want your gift used for a particular purpose.

Gifts of Stock and Securities

If you own appreciated stock or mutual funds, you can gift them to West Nottingham Academy. By doing so you can take a charitable deduction for an amount equal to the value of the stock on the day we receive it, and you avoid any capital gains tax that you would have paid had you sold the stock. In this way, the tax savings can be much more significant than with a gift of cash.

For gifts of stocks and securities, please ask your broker to transfer stocks and securities to the following account:

EIN: 52-0591693
Name: The West Nottingham Academy in Cecil County
UBS Financial Services, Inc.
DTC: 0221
Acct: JW22304
Memo: Donor info + WNA Endowment
Contact Name: James Cannon
Contact Phone Number: 410-576-3215

Please forward details regarding a pending stock transfer to our Business Office, specifying the name and number of shares transferred, the date of transfer to our account, and the mean market value per share on the date of transfer.

Important: Please ask your broker to inform the Academy’s broker of your name. Without this information, West Nottingham’s broker will not know to whom the gift should be credited. In addition, please ask your broker—or you may do so yourself—to inform the school via advancement@wna.org of your intent noting the approximate shares and name(s) of stocks being transferred so that we are
certain to quickly credit the proper donor.
