Why choose West Nottingham?

Imagine a school where students and their experiences—both academic and personal—are the top priority. A place  where students intern with elite universities like MIT, UPenn, and NYU, receiving direct support for their dreams of attending these prestigious institutions. Envision a school that connects students with global mentors, providing them with invaluable insights into various careers and enabling them to work directly with leaders in their fields. This is where inspiration and innovation intersect, fostering an environment that encourages exploration and growth.

At West Nottingham Academy (WNA), our students are not just numbers; they are the very reason we exist. Our mission is rooted in teaching and coaching, with a focus on nurturing the whole individual. With deep historical roots and a progressive outlook, we aim to do more than simply educate. We believe in shaping young people who are prepared to take on the world with integrity, compassion, and confidence. Whether they are just beginning their journey as freshmen or preparing for graduation, every moment at WNA is designed to be transformative.

WNA functions like a vibrant mini-universe, brimming with opportunities for personal and academic growth. Our students:

  • Engage in competitive athletics’
  • Participate in the arts
  • Join student-run clubs like the Model United Nations and Vex Robotics’

Life here transcends academics; it encompasses the creation of lasting friendships, participation in campus traditions such as the Nottingham Open, Spirit Week, and various holiday celebrations, all while experiencing the rich diversity that defines our community. Students don’t just attend events; they actively help plan them, ensuring that every voice is heard and every idea is valued.

We firmly believe in balance.

  • We challenge our students academically, but we also provide support.
  • Our small class sizes allow passionate teachers to create an intimate learning environment where students feel seen, heard, and inspired to push their boundaries.

This personalized academic approach offers everything from core subjects to innovative projects and independent study options, along with leadership development initiatives that prepare our students for future success.

There is also a strong emphasis on character development. Our students:

  • Encouraged to engage in community service, fostering a sense of responsibility and empathy.
  • Empower students through the Global Citizenship Program, teaching students to understand and tackle global challenges, instilling a sense of agency and purpose.

By working together on meaningful projects, students learn the importance of collaboration, communication, and leadership—skills that are essential in today’s interconnected world.

West Nottingham Academy is more than just a school; it is a home where young people grow into leaders, creators, and change makers. Our graduates leave equipped not only with academic knowledge but also with the social and emotional skills necessary to navigate life’s complexities. They are prepared to engage thoughtfully and responsibly with the world around them.

This is West Nottingham Academy—a place where students are empowered to dream big, find their unique voices, take risks, and transform their aspirations into reality. Here, we cultivate not just scholars, but well-rounded individuals ready to make a positive impact on the world. Together, we are building a legacy of excellence, one student at a time.

Academic Challenge

WNA provides a college-preparatory curriculum with an emphasis on providing an individualized curriculum. The average class size is 11 students with an overall teacher-to-student ratio of 1:7. This ratio offers a multitude of opportunities for the enrichment of the whole student while ensuring a safe environment as students mature through their high school years. It allows the chance to ask questions, seek help, and develop a deeper understanding of a subject through strong relationships with the teacher and classmates.

For those students who seek additional academic support for diagnosed learning differences, ADD or ADHD, or for building the necessary time-management and study skills, the Chesapeake Learning Center offers the opportunity to acquire these skills and reach academic potential through individualized programming and coaching. We offer three Signature Certificate Programs in the areas of STEM and Innovation, Visual Arts, and Environmental Sustainability complementing our progressive and hands-on approach to curriculum. Each year, we also offer a number of AP classes that prepare students for college-level curriculum.

Faculty Guidance and Support

WNA thrives through its teachers, who are the essence of our school. Our faculty and staff are passionate and talented individuals committed to helping each student achieve her or his full potential. Teachers are also the advisors, coaches, and dorm parents who ensure that learning continues well beyond the classroom. All students meet with an advisor regularly to touch base on all aspects of community life, from academic challenges to social and personal issues.

West Nottingham Academy also provides students access to mental health services through an on-campus licensed mental health practitioner. The counselor’s primary role is to support the students with daily stressors, interpersonal relationships, and assessment of other mental health needs.

College Preparation and Counseling

Whether it is finding the right college fit, preparing for standardized testing, seeking guidance to complete a successful application, or setting up campus visits, the College Counseling Office is a valuable resource for all students and families. The college counseling process at WNA is comprehensive and highly personalized.
