West Nottingham Academy senior Mariano Tanedo proves that talent, dedication, and leadership go hand in hand. As the starting point guard for WNA’s National basketball team, he’s spent years refining his craft, averaging an impressive 12 points, 7.5 assists, and 3 steals per game. His team competes in a highly competitive national schedule, but Mariano’s impact extends far beyond the court.

Recognizing Mariano’s leadership skills, he was given the opportunity to lead the boys varsity basketball team. Mariano accepted the challenge and stepped up to lead his peers. Balancing his own rigorous basketball schedule, a 3.8 GPA, and responsibilities as a Prefect (student dorm leader), he accepted the challenge of coaching WNA students with determination and enthusiasm.

A Day in the Life of a Leader

Mariano’s day starts at 6 a.m. with extra shots in the gym before school. After a full academic day, he attends team practice, lifts post-workout, and prepares detailed practice plans for the Varsity squad. His deep basketball IQ and earned respect from teammates made him a natural fit for the role.

Giving Back to the Game

“Basketball has given me so much,” Mariano says. “Coaching allows me to give back, share my knowledge, and help the team grow.” Athletic Director and Head National Basketball Coach Kirsty Leedham praises his leadership: “Mariano never ceases to amaze me. His work ethic, drive, and passion make him a coach’s dream. Any college coach would be lucky to have him—he’s a culture builder who exceeds every expectation.”

A Bright Future Ahead

Under his leadership, the Varsity team has thrived, benefiting from his firsthand experience and strategic approach. Whether leading on the National team or coaching at WNA, Mariano exemplifies true leadership. West Nottingham Academy is proud to celebrate Mariano Tanedo—a student-athlete whose journey is just beginning. His future in basketball and beyond is exceptionally bright.
