Jane Philips
Curating art to life

Jane Philips was born and raised on the gulf coast of Alabama, surrounded by woodlands, beaches, and swamps. Her mother passed on a wonder and curiosity for the natural world which Jane continues to express through her paintings. Much of her work reflects her struggle with anxiety and her exploration of humanity and nature.

A graduate of the prestigious Maryland Institute College of Art, she mastered oil painting, her primary love. She excels in ither various mixed media, including charcoal, graphite, and encaustic, with a special focus on portraits and figure drawing. Her dedication to teaching was evident in her four-week summer program in 2023 at the New York Academy of Arts (NYAA), where she instructed students in oil painting techniques, anatomy, composition, and concept building. As a Chubb fellow, she further contributed as a teaching assistant, further cementing her love of teaching students the fine points of

Jane believes that both the classroom environment and the natural surroundings play a vital role in her artistic practice. Her work explores the connection between people and nature, using the landscape as a metaphor for internal struggles. Drawing inspiration from her outdoor explorations, she emphasizes the importance of direct observation in her creative process.

As a mentor for WNA’s students in the Aspiring Artists program, those students get one-on-one instruction. She recognizes the impact that her own high school art teacher and scholarship programs had on her artistic journey. Jane aims to honor her mentors by making a positive difference in the lives of students through her teaching.

Jane loves dogs and always has hers by her side. She holds a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and is currently an MFA candidate at the New York Academy of Art.
