[Colora, MD] – In a historic triumph, the West Nottingham Academy Boys National Team claimed their first-ever Greater Atlantic Conference Championship, defeating two-time defending champions Our Saviour Lutheran in a thrilling 101-92 victory. This milestone victory marks a turning point for the program, which had never advanced past the first round in previous years.

West Nottingham Academy stormed through the conference, capturing wins against the 32nd nationally ranked, Knox School and then making a statement in the semifinals with a commanding 103-73 win over Springfield Commonwealth Academy. With momentum on their side, they delivered a determined performance in the championship game to dethrone Our Saviour Lutheran and claim the title.
Under Athletic Director and Head Coach Kirsty Leedham, the program is breaking barriers. Not only is it a rarity that Coach Leedham is one of the few women coaching on the boys’ side in basketball, but for the first time, West Nottingham Academy has been nationally ranked in the top 70 all season, reaching as high as 34th. They continue to set new standards, now securing the first Conference Championship at the Elite National Basketball level.
After the Championship, the opposing coach told Head Coach Kirsty Leedham that she has her team playing really hard, a compliment she proudly considers the best she can receive.
Senior standout Mariano Tañedo was named Most Valuable Player of the Championship after contributing 17 points, 7 assists, and 3 steals.

However, it was his leadership and ability to control the pace of the game that earned him the honor. Voting coaches praised Tañedo as the heart and soul of the team, citing his court vision, composure, and defensive tenacity as key factors in West Nottingham’s success.
“This victory means everything to our team, our school, and our supporters,” said Head Coach Kirsty Leedham. “The hard work is paying off, the hours are worth it. The literal blood, sweat, and tears that have been put into this season is all coming to fruition. I am so proud of these guys for buying into the program, and putting their trust in me to take them there. We aren’t done yet though, we want more!”
West Nottingham Academy’s championship run is a testament to the growth and dedication of the program. With this breakthrough achievement, the team has set a new standard and built a foundation for future success. West Nottingham Academy National team will have the opportunity to gain another first when they head to Dayton, OH for the Prep School National Championships hosted by Big Baller Brand in just 2 weeks.
